USS TRUXTUN DDG 103  and the US Navy I would like to take up a few minutes of your time today to recap a few days I just had out in Norfolk. My son Rick has been in the navy just  over 1 year now. I went out to Norfolk on May 7 to be pier side when his ship ( USS Truxtun DDG 103) pulled away for a 7 month deployment. I was able to spend a few days with him prior to him leaving, and was so impressed with the Naval Base and the people on the base. I also was surprised when my son asked if I wanted…See More

Hi Fred,

Thank you for joining the Destroyer group and for your friend request.  I enjoyed reading your post "Great Day May 11 2011".  I feel your pride in more ways then you can imagine.  Coincidently, I took my first steps onto my son's ship the USS Howard (DDG-83) on May 10th 2009.  And to make it even a more thrilling occasion for me than it already was... it was my birthday and it was also Mother's Day.  And to put the icing on the cake (no pun intended, lol), it was my son's (Billy) first time on the ship as well.  So, I had the honor of being with my son when he took those first steps onto his ship.  He was in C-School at the time and hadn't reported for duty yet, so we were basically guests that day.  We got a personal tour by one of his soon to be Chief Petty Officer's. It was an experience I will cherish forever.  I think I was more excited about it than Billy was.  I have had the priviledge of touring the Howard three times now.... most recently in March for a Family Day Cruise.  I could go on forever about what I experienced that day of the FDC.  My son has been active duty nearing 3 yrs. now and is currently on his first deployment with the ship.

Good luck to Rick!  I hope he enjoys being a part of the crew of USS Truxton.  I would be happy to share information about my son's experience on his destroyer if you have any questions.

Take Care,

Paige

Fred, Welcome Aboard!

When my son first enlisted in the Navy I found NavyForMoms in searching for answers to his future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads but found out I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and hope this site will benefit fathers that follow behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your Sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud Navy Dads just like myself. I hope this site benefits you and your family throughout your sons journey in the Navy. Thank Richard for his service for me and thanks again for joining us.

Sincerely, E.G.

Welcome to NavyDads.com Fred! I'm sure you'll find NavyDads.com as useful, educational and informative as I have. Please explore the site and make some new Navy friends.  Be sure to read the discussions add your comments or start a new discussion.  Browse through the postings in the various groups or start a new one. I certainly have! If you have any comments, questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...be sure to post them! In my experience someone here can answer your questions or concerns or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm blessed to have two sailors in the family - my son Eric (AM3) is stationed on the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat (MC3) recently completed her five-year enlistment on the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Fred this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in, get active, and be sure to let us know how Richard is doing! Please remember that we talk about the Navy here and we must keep the security and safety of our sailors and the fleet in mind at all times. On the right or starboard side of every NavyDads.com page is an area we call About This Site.  Please take a minute and read through the Operations Security (OPSEC) link for some guidelines as to what we should and should not talk about in a public forum like NavyDads.com. And stop by the NavyDads offical store- Navyoutfitters.com!  Show your support for NavyDads.com by wearing the latest in NavyDads attire.  Best Regards- Paul

Fred, Welcome to NAVYDADS. My Grandson joined the Navy and went to Boot Camp in February, 2008. When I joined I knew nothing about the Military and this site has really helped me understand what to expect and has relieved some of the worries I had. Please go to the Groups Page and check out of the different Group and join in to learn more about what your Guy or Girl will be learning and doing. We are a big family here and you can find answers to most any question you may had regarding what is in store for your recruit. You will find others that are new to the Navy along with those that have Loved Ones that has been in for some time. We like to hear about your recruit the good times, the concerns and the question. I think you will find that our member are just a great big family and everyone wants to help others understand what to expect and hear how your recruit is doing.

Please feel free to ask question.

Again Welcome and keep us updated of your recruit’s progress.

HooYah US Navy!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome aboard to Navy Dads Fred! When my son first enlisted, I was a little scared and worried for him. Not coming from a military family at all, I had no idea what to expect. What I found out was that he had made the most mature decision of his life! I found lots of answers to my questions right here on NavyDads.com. I will brag a little here and tell you that I was the first dad outside of the creator’s family to join this site. After two years, E.G. and Paul asked me to become one of the co-administrators. I was honored. But this is not about me, it’s about you and your Sailor!

I have one sailor in the family - my son Stephen is an AWO2. (Air warfare systems operator) He is a Petty Officer 2nd Class and flies in the P-3 Orion sub hunter. Currently he is with VP-45 in Jacksonville, FL. This is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Richard is doing!

We do ask that you remember that we talk about the Navy here and we must keep the security and safety of our sailors in mind at all times. On the starboard side of every Navy Dads page is an area we call “About Us.” Please take a minute and read through the Operations Security (OPSEC) link and the NavyDads Guidelines link. Also check out the FAQs at the top of the pages, and also on the starboard side. There is lots of information there as well. Also be sure to check out the “Navy Dads Tutorial” in the FAQ section. It’s a short video that will help you to navigate around the site.

Also be sure to stop by the NavyDads official store- Navyoutfitters.com. The Navy Blue tee shirt with the NavyDads.com logo is my favorite! Again, welcome and we’ll see you around the fleet! GO NAVY! HOOYAH!

Best Regards- Jim

Welcome aboard Fred.
I would like to take this time to point you in some of the right directions. For starters if you haven't had the time take a look at the right side of any page you click on. There you will find some useful information for you. The links under the about this site will help you with how this site got started, navigation, PIR, About us, community guidelines and some links to some of the groups that beginners with a lot of questions will find very useful.
First and foremost though we are all here for the same reason. We are curious about what our young sailors are getting into and for more information about the rate or job that they will be doing for the next 4-6 yrs of their lives. I know when I first got here I had lots of questions and there was not a lot of people on this site but they all were either going through the same thing or had been through it and had sailors out in the fleet. Now this site has grown to over 2000 members, Dads, Moms,Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, sisters, brothers, girlfriends and boyfriends. Don't be afraid to ask questions of members in here because somewhere along the way we have all had the same questions and asked . There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site with various years of experience in the NAVY either on their own account or through their Sailors.
Again welcome aboard and BRAVO ZULU to you and your son Richard on his enlistment and please thank him for me for making the choice to defend the freedoms that my family, this country and I have and enjoy.
